At the head of road navigation of the Veneon valley, cutting deeply into the Ecrins National Park is Berarde .. at 1700 metres. From Berarde walking routes strike both north and south, linking with a network of huts, or refuges .. for climbers.

Looking down upon Berarde, once an isolated Alpine hamlet, but now, at summer at least, a busy terminus for climbers and walkers, and campers in the fields below the settlement.

The village from the far bank of the Veneon. Most of the buildings, despite the attention of modern tourists, reflect traditional usage .. such as accommodation for people and for animals. The riverbank has received some attention, possibly to maintain a rough roadway below the village.

The main valley of the Veneon takes a leisurely turn to the south. The deep, scree-clothed valley sides are the backdrop for the milk-white river. Both the rock-flour in the water and the boulder-strewn braids give a hint to its glacial origin, from the Glacier de la Pilatte, some 14 kms to the south.

Following a footpath to the north was rewarded by a view up to the moraines below the Glacier de Bonne Pierre at 2300 metres.

The climber's refuges are resupplied by helicopter!

The Veneon offers river rafting. This crew posed for a photo quite happily, but were nearly undone by their loss of concentration!
