Cliff failure and mass movement
|
||
|
The bulbous extremity of a slump pushes onto the shoreline, where a lowered beach allows high tides to scour its foot into low, soft cliffs. |
A number of slumps are currently emerging from the large amphitheatre below the Naze Tower. |
One last slump onto the beach! |

The concrete pillbox acts as a coastal recession marker. |
Fine silt and sand overlies some of the clay beach .. the clay being seen on the shoreline. |
Looking back at the cliff from the pillbox to a landscape of always fresh erosion. |

The London Clay basement is being overridden by landslips and mudflows. |
Here a large sand fall has occurred from the upper part of the cliffs. |
This was moving! A very mobile - if small - mudflow invades the beach. |

At the northern end of the Naze the spoil from dredging Harwich Harbour are almost gone; these low cliffs (1-2 metres) represent some of the last of the material. |
