Brookfield Farm, West Sussex

1.

a)  Fill in the land use of the farms from the table below the map. Use a colour key to suit the colours you have.

b)  Influences on the Farm - Climate. Using the sheet The Climate of England and Wales describe the climate at the farms .. which are near Horsham in West Sussex.  Colour in this climate sheet.

Relief and soils - The farms are about 60 metres altitude running down gently to the banks of the River Arun. Soils are largely Weald clays, slightly acidic at pH 6.1 and heavy to work. They are fertile and retain moisture, but are slow to warm in spring and do not allow excess rainwater to drain freely .. so waterlogging is likely. Farm machinery tends to compact the soil.

c)  Why do you think the land near the river is kept as permanent grassland?

d)  What can be done to make the clay land easier to work?

e)  Some fields have been planted in blocks of the same crop. What advantages will this give the farmer?

f)  Labour needs can be estimated by looking at the diagram of the farm year. Mark in the times when extra labour is needed on the outside of the diagram.

g)  The Farm as a System Using the Farm Year diagram complete the System Diagram of Brookfield Farm.

Remember inputs are all the things that come into the farm; seeds, diesel, bank loans, etc.  Processes include all the things that go on to produce food on the farm, ploughing, drilling, doing the accounts, etc. and outputs are those products and services that leave the farm - grain, fat cattle, etc.
