The elevated section of the Hanshin Highway, some of which collapsed on its unwrapped concrete supports, is rebuilt to a high specification.

Kobe burns the night after the earthquake. Gas leaks and the flimsy , and flammable, constructions materials of many of the houses helped spread the flames. Most Japanese like to cook on an open flame. The failure of the emergency services to get to grips with the fire risk was one of the black marks against the authorities in the aftermath of the earthquake; another was their failure to ask for specialist foreign assistance, such as sniffer dogs and thermal imaging teams.

Earthquakes in Japan

data sheet of great Japanese Earthquakes

  1. Plot the magnitude of the earthquakes on the graph sheet.

  2. Make bar charts of the number of EQ's over 6.9 in the chart at the bottom of the page.

  3. Is the occurrence of EQ's in Japan at regular intervals .. are any decades especially severely affected. If so, which ones?.

  4. watch video: Tokyo Earthquake QED

  5. What is the attitude of the Japanese authorities to predicting earthquakes? What have they set up to warn the people of an earthquake threat?

  6. Make a list of all the way the people in the film die, and what causes their death.

  7. Make some suggestions as to what the Japanese might do to reduce the killing effects of earthquakes.

Virtual earthquake - get to the site and choose earthquake. This will let you choose one of three earthquakes, which you can locate by measuring their

earthquake waves. Very good fun!
