The level of development
of a country has, in the past, been judged simply by how much
money is earned in the country.
-
This is called GDP and is
usually given in dollars ($).
-
GDP stands for
Gross (All the money earned) Domestic (Just the one
country) Product (added together)
-
Large countries will have
bigger incomes than smaller countries of the same wealth, so
we can improve our understanding by then divide this income
between all the people of a country. This gives a figure of
dollars per head .. and is called
GDP per capita.

Human Development
Index
is a system that uses many indicators to rank the
world's countries. Income is important, but so are other
factors. These statistics are then given weightings ... they
don't all count as important as each other .. and a final
figure worked out. |
