How we arrived at the
Package Tour
Wealthy people went on the Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th centuries ..
visiting he treasures of European culture.
Thomas Cook arranged foreign travel for wealthy travellers.
Railways brought travel, at least to the seaside, for all.
Workers got Saturday, as well as Sunday, off - the weekend was born!
WW2 transformed people's outlook; men had travelled the world, Americans
had brought their ideas into Britain, and wages had shot up.
Paid holiday became normal; wages rose further, TV and travel programmes
came into our homes.
The jet airlines made getting to holiday cheaper and faster.
Tour operators organised the inclusive holiday, arranging travel and
accommodation (at bulk prices).
